Dispute is an inevitable part of human relations. Hence, resolution of dispute is thus an essential element of communal peace and social security. Historically, before the conquest and consequent colonization of most African Societies had their traditional informal dispute resolution mechanisms where disputes were decided by the intervention of elders or assemblies of learned men and tribal chiefs within the society.

Therefore, what we have as the contemporary ADR mechanism may be likened to the African traditional systems of dispute resolution which were characterized by simple and informal procedures.  

This lesson will attempt to discuss the trend, development, processes and challenges of the practice of arbitration and sundry ADR mechanism in the Nigerian legal system and conclude by making relevant suggestions towards making ADR more viable and limiting the challenges regarding the use of ADR in Nigeria.
