Renewable energy is often thought of as a new technology, but harnessing nature’s power has long been used for heating, transportation, lighting, and more. Wind has powered boats to sail the seas and windmills to grind grain; The sun has provided warmth during the day and helped kindle fires to last into the evening. But over the past 500 years or so, humans have taken in to maximize available energy resources which includes fossil fuels, hydropower, solar energy, etc. Amongst these different energy resources, fossil fuel takes the lead, powering economics in bigger dimensions than in the past. However, while advantages exist as regards the use of fossil fuel, its disadvantages are disastrous as the dominance of fossil fuel-based power generation (Coal, Oil and Gas) and an exponential increase in population for the past decades have led to a growing demand for energy, resulting in global challenges associated with a rapid growth in carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. Succinctly, we have the planet gradually collapsing around our ears because of the waste output from the excessive use of fossil fuels, hence the present chase for sustainable energy.
